Mais uma semana, e mais uma sugestão cinematográfica. E desta vez, esta sugestão, vem mesmo a jeito, pois hoje é celebrado o “Halloween” (ou o “Dia das Bruxas”) em vários países. E para quem não seja fã de filmes de terror, porque não um thriller sobrenatural?

Eu sinto que vos tenho estado a encher de sugestões cinematográficas, este ano. A verdade é que nem sempre dou muita atenção a esta rubrica. Por isso, espero que estejam a gostar destas sugestões (pois mais virão nas próximas semanas).

Baseado no romance de Joe Hill, “Horns” é um thriller sobrenatural carregado de mistério, romance e fantasia. O filme segue Ig Perrish, o suspeito número um da violação e do violento assassinato da sua namorada, Merrin. De ressaca, depois de uma noite de bebedeira, Ig acorda uma manhã e descobre que chifres estão a começar a crescer a partir da sua própria cabeça, e depressa apercebe-se que o seu poder leva a que as pessoas confessem os seus pecados e cedam aos seus impulsos mais egoístas e indizíveis – uma ferramenta eficaz na busca para descobrir as verdadeiras circunstâncias da tragédia da sua falecida namorada, e para se vingar a sua morte.

Este website apresenta a seguinte descrição: “‘Horns’ is a bit of a tonal jumble, but it offers enough thoughtful horror-comedy — and strong work from Daniel Radcliffe — to hook genre enthusiasts”. O autor do romance, no qual se baseia este filme, escreveu que Daniel Radcliffe demonstrou uma “wrenching, vulnerable, emotionally naked performance that isn’t like anything he’s ever done on screen before. He is such a wonderful Ig Perrish”.

“Horns” estreia hoje (31 Outubro) nos Estados Unidos da América. Até ao momento, a sua estreia para Portugal ainda não está bem definida. Por um lado, o site da Sapo não apresenta uma estreia para este filme. Por outro lado, o site IMDb apresenta a estreia como sendo no próximo dia 6 de Novembro.

A song from the year that you were born…

À primeira, eu não fazia ideia que música é que poderia ou iria escolher. Depois lembrei-me dos Green Day porque eu sei que lançaram alguns álbuns nos anos 90, no entanto, nenhum no ano em que eu nasci. Mas depois esta música apareceu-me do nada, por assim dizer. E agora que eu penso nisso, ela até que me traz muito boas memórias. Eu ouvi-a umas vezes enquanto estive em França, a participar num projecto de investigação de Arqueologia, no passado Verão (logo, em 2013). Eu ficou completamente gravada na minha memória durante o resto do ano, e foi assim que eu me lembrei dela. Eu não fazia mesmo ideia do que é que iria escolher, e assim esta pareceu-me a solução perfeita.

At first, i had no idea what song I could or would choose. Then I though about Green Day because I know they released a few albums in the 1990s, however none in the year when I was born. But then this song appeared to me, so to speak. And now that I think about it, it brings me very good memories. I listened to it a couple of times while I was in France participating in an archaeological research project, last summer (so in 2013). It got stuck in my head for the rest of the year and that’s how I remembered it. I had no idea what to choose, so this seemed like the perfect solution.

Holland: Life in Leiden #1

E só agora é que reparei que ainda não mostrei fotografias, nem falei muito sobre a cidade onde estou a viver, desde o início do mês passado (Setembro). Já estou aqui há pouco mais de dois meses, por isso acho que é tempo de falar um pouco mais da minha experiência em como é viver nos Países Baixos. Leiden é uma cidade e um município da província da Holanda do Sul (pois, o nome do país não é Holanda, de todo). Embora seja uma cidade pequena, Leiden é uma importante cidade universitária, visto que nela se situa a universidade mais antiga dos Países Baixos, fundada em 1575 – universidade esta na qual eu estou agora a estudar. Pela cidade passa o “velho Reno” (“Oude Rijn”), para além dos vários canais. Aliás, esta é uma das mais famosas características das regiões flamengas (Países Baixos e parte flamenga da Bélgica). O facto da cidade ser pequena torna muito fácil qualquer deslocação dentro dela, se bem que basicamente toda a gente utiliza uma bicicleta como meio de transporte – aliás, depois de nos habituarmos à bicicleta, já não queremos outra coisa. A cidade é bastante calma, especialmente nas zonas residenciais, o que eu acho que é fantástico e adoro. No entanto, com os estudantes universitários, a cidade é bastante movimentada no centro, onde estão os principais bares/pubs da cidade. E o que não falta nesta cidade são parques. Honestamente, ao fim destes dois meses, Leiden já se tornou na minha segunda casa. As fotografias que vos apresento foram alteradas com o programa “pixelmator”.

And I’ve just noticed now that I haven’t showed you guys photos, nor talked much about the city where I’m living now, since the beginning of last month (September). I’ve been here for a bit more than two months, so I think it’s time to talk a bit more about my experience in how it is to live in the Netherlands. Leiden it’s a city and a municipality of the province of South Holland (yeah right, the name of the country it’s not Holland, not at all). Even though it is a small city, Leiden it’s a very important university city, since the oldest Dutch university, funded in 1575, is situated here – university in which I’m studying now. The “old Rhine” (“Oude Rijn”) passes through this city, apart from several canals. This is by far one of the most famous characteristics from the flemish regions (the Netherlands and the flemish part of Belgium). That fact that the city it’s actually small makes it a lot easier to walk within it, even though everyone uses a bike as a means of transportation – actually, after you get used to using your bike, you won’t want anything else. The city is quite quiet, especially in the residential areas, which is something fantastic and that I love. However, with its university students, it gets quite busy in the city centre, where the main bars/pubs are located. And what it’s not missing in this city is green parks. Honestly, after these two months, Leiden has already become my second home. The photos that I’m presenting you guys were altered using the programme “pixelmator”.

E como prometido, hoje trago-vos a minha segunda sugestão cinematográfica desta semana. E desta vez a rubrica já voltei ao seu formato original, ou seja, com publicações nos dias de estreias dos filmes nos EUA. No entanto, até ao final do ano é capaz de haver mais algumas excepções.

Hoje apresento-vos mais uma sugestão cinematográfica (e poderão contar com uma segunda sugestão amanhã também). Como tenho estado a dizer, na minha opinião, estamos a chegar à época mais “busy” em termos de estreias cinematográficas. E mais uma vez, estamos de volta à minhas excepções, no que toca a esta rubrica. Acho que é a primeira vez que estou a publicar uma sugestão sem o filme em questão ter uma estreia nos EUA (bem, há uma primeira vez para tudo, como se costuma dizer).

Situado nas montanhas da Carolina do Norte na década de 1920, “Serena” é uma história de amor entre George Pemberton e a sua jovem mulher Serena, uma estreante no mundo dos negócios da exploração da terra e da madeira. A força e capacidade de liderança de Serena surpreende os trabalhadores e as ambições que ela tem sobre o crescimento da empresa aumentam à medida que se prepara para lutar contra o governo para manter as suas terras em vez de as vender para os Parques Nacionais. Mas a tragédia atinge este casal depois de Serena sofrer um aborto e descobrir que não pode mais ter filhos. Esta condição faz com que não consiga suportar a ideia do filho ilegítimo que o seu marido teve de uma relação anterior e acaba por contratar um dos funcionários para assassinar o filho antes de estes se conhecerem.

Let they inspire you #12

First of all, I’m sorry for my recent absence from the blog. This past week and a half has been totally crazy. This week is our first exam season. Because our semesters are divided in two blocks, and the 1st block ended last Friday, this is our exam week for the block 1’s modules. Thankfully, I had only two and I’ve already done them. Not sure how they went (and it’s something that I really don’t wanna think about right now), so I’m not gonna discuss it here. I’m just glad that I’ll have the rest of this week to rest before the start of the 2nd block, next Monday. However, I’m really excited about my next block.

Second of all, today I’m bringing you guys another outfit inspiration post. And today’s inspirations are going to be totally different from each other, since the weather in Portugal is totally the opposite of the weather in the Netherlands, now. This is actually really funny. So, while in Portugal it’s sunny and warm (or should I say really hot for Autumn), in the Netherlands we’re in the middle of a tropical storm (Gonzalo). It has rained a lot today (not as much as I thought though), but the worst has been the wind. I guess this is a bit of “welcome to Dutch Autumn”. I took these outfit’s from lookbook’s website.

A song that you would sing as a duet with someone on karaoke…

Bem… Na realidade eu não me vejo a cantar em público. Só o faço em casa e é quando sei que estou sozinha, e a música está sempre alta o suficiente para eu quase nem me ouvir a mim mesma. E honestamente não faço ideia que música é que escolheria. No entanto, optei por esta porque simplesmente adoro a “cover” que fizeram no Glee. Eu sempre fui (e ainda continuarei a ser) fã das vozes da Lea Michele (Rachel) e do Darren Criss (Blaine). E as vozes dos dois juntas ficam absolutamente perfeitas.

Well, actually I don’t see myself singing in public. I only do it at home and it’s only when I know that I’m home alone, and the music it’s always high enough that I don’t almost hear me. And honestly I’ve no idea what song I would choose. However, I opted for this one because I just love the cover that they did in Glee. I’ve always been (and will always be) a fan of Lea Michele (Rachel) and Darren Criss’ (Blaine) voices. And their voices together, they’re just perfect.

Things I’m looking forward to (2014/2015)

Watching sporting events such as the Olympic Games or the Football World Cup has always secondary effects on me. I don’t know why but as soon as those events start I have this urge to see all kinds of sporting events, what ends up by never happening because there isn’t much to see in Portugal (apart from the “Primeira Liga” – our major football league). But now that I’m in the Netherlands, a new window of opportunities just opened to me. As you can see from the list above, my all-time favourite sports are football and tennis. I could have added the World Swimming Championship but since it is going to be held in Mexico, it’s still too far away for me to attend it (as much as I’d like to).

I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to watch all of these, probably not even one, but a girl can dream right? Money-wise, these aren’t exactly the most cheap sporting events there is. I mean, football matches for the national teams should be quite cheap, but I think this is the only exception. I’d love to see a football match in Germany but that would mean more money to spend on a one-night stay there, so it is kinda off the question. And I can say the same for the tennis tournaments that aren’t in the Netherlands – well all of them except for the Rotterdam one.

And then, I don’t see myself going to a sporting event in another country without some kind of company, which in these cases is always complicated. I don’t know that many people here that would be willing to do this. Oh well, I guess I can set the Rotterdam tournament as my goal and hope that one of my favourite male tennis players will play there, next year (9-15 February 2015).

FashionSkribo apresenta… “The Riot Club”

Hoje apresento-vos mais uma sugestão cinematográfica. Honestamente, penso que estamos a chegar à época mais “busy” no que diz respeito a estreias cinematográficas. Estamos nos últimos meses do ano, meses estes em que vários são os (bons) filmes a estrearem. Eu costumo publicar estas sugestões às sexta-feiras, quando os filmes estreiam nos Estados Unidos (pois estas são as suas estreias mundiais, por assim dizer), mas hoje é uma excepção.

O filme de hoje não só tem um tema interessante (embora seja pouco convencional), como também tem um elenco bastante bom. Uma coisa é certa, estou muito curiosa para ver este filme – se bem que não sei quando é que o farei. Este filme é baseado na obra “Posh” de Laura Wade.

Alistair and Miles, ambos com ligações aristocráticas, começam o seu primeiro ano na Oxford University, embora eles sejam muito diferentes. O Miles é mais terra-a-terra e está feliz por ter uma namorada de um estrato social mais baixo, Lauren, enquanto que o Alistair é mais snobe e tem como aspiração seguir as pegadas do seu tio, um Membro do Parlamento Inglês, do Partido Conservador (Tory). O elo em comum é que ambos tornam-se membros do “Riot Club“, um “drinking club” de longa data, que se orgulha no hedonismo e na crença de que o dinheiro pode comprar qualquer coisa. Depois de terem sido impedidos de entrar na maioria dos estabelecimentos em Oxford, eles acabam por ter o seu jantar anual num “country pub“, onde os seus comportamentos desordeiros acabam por irritar os outros clientes, embora eles reembolsem Chris, o senhorio. Eles contratam uma prostituta mas ela recusa-se a fazer sexo em grupo, mas de seguida, um deles liga à Lauren, quem eles incomodam para horror de Max. Ficando cada vez mais bêbados e ingerindo cada vez mais drogas, eles começam a destruir a sala e quando Chris chega e começa a reclamar, Alistair ataca-o barbaramente, mandando-o para o hospital. Embora chocados, nenhum dos outros tenta detê-lo, com a excepção do Miles, que é atacado antes de chamar uma ambulância. Os rapazes são todos presos, mas acreditando que o clube é mais importante do que o indivíduo, eles todos concordam em não prestar declarações e sugerem que Miles, o mais novo membro do clube, deverá assumir a culpa pelo ataque a Chris. Contudo, após provas forenses, Alistair é acusado e preso. Subsequentemente, Lauren deixa Miles, que decide não ter mais nada a ver com o “Riot Club“.

Até ao momento, este filme conta com uma classificação de 81% (com base em 32 críticas) no site de críticas – rottentomatoes. Este site apresenta a seguinte descrição “‘The Riot Club‘ may not be subtle, but it makes its points with power, using dark humor and a talented cast to offer a scathing indictment of unearned privilege”.

Como já mencionei no início, este post é uma excepção. E isto porquê? Porque este filme ainda não tem uma data para a sua estreia no Estados Unidos da América (estranho, eu sei). “The Riot Club” estreou dia 19 de Setembro no Reino Unido, e estreia hoje (9 Outubro) em Portugal.
