“Supergirl” é uma série de ficção, acção e aventura de super-heróis baseada em diversas personagens da DC Comics, criadas por Otto Binder, Al Plastino, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Dan Jurgens, Joseph Samachson, Joseph Certa, Marv Wolfman e Jerry Ordway. Esta série conta a história de Kara Zor-El (Kara Danvers) que foi enviada para a Terra a partir do seu planta Krypton, quando ela tinha 12 anos. Ela foi enviada para proteger o seu primo mais novo, Kal-El (Clark Kent). Contudo, a sua nave espacial foi desviada e forçada a entrada na Phantom Zone, onde ela esteve durante 24 anos. Quando ela eventualmente chegou à Terra, o seu primo já se tinha tornado num adulto e mostrado-se como Super-homem. A Kara foi colocada numa família de acolhimento e a sua verdadeira identidade manteve-se em segredo, até que um acidente de aviação a fez mostrar os seus verdadeiros poderes. Não me interpretem mal quando digo isto, mas há sempre aquele grupo de séries que é simplesmente “average”. E eu penso que esta série é um desses casos. Não é que a série seja má, eu até acho que ela é interessante q.b. e até a recomendo, mas a verdade é que fica sempre aquela sensação de não estarmos a ver algo extraordinário. E aliás, às vezes até penso se não chega. Quer dizer, nos dias que correm, quantas séries de super-heróis, sobretudo baseadas nas bandas-desenhadas da DC e da MARVEL, é que existem? A Netflix começou basicamente com duas, neste momento já vai em cinco séries. A CW começou com uma, neste momento já vai numas outras cinco séries. Às vezes penso se não é um bocadinho too much. Mas como isto está na moda e, de certeza, que lhes dá montes de dinheiro, se não não continuavam a produzir estas séries, está visto que a quase hegemonia deste género está para ficar.

Como já mencionei, esta série é basicamente uma coisa que não é mau mas também não é óptima, em termos de personagens, enredo, efeitos especiais, etc. Não sei bem se isto é uma crítica, e neste caso negativa, mas a versão de um super-herói nerd, adorável e super prestável, que devido à sua história menos felizarda, está disposto a ajudar todos desde o primeiro segundo, já não foi feita? É que desde o início que a série me parece uma versão feminina de “The Flash”. Quer dizer, é óptimo termos uma série – sem esquecer, está claro, o sucesso que é “Jessica Jones” – final e completamente centrada numa personagem feminina, mas eu cá achava que era muito mais produtivo se esta fosse uma personagem única, e não uma espécie de versão feminina de outra (por exclusão, masculina). Um bocado de maior representação de minorias também não ficaria nada mal. Mas aquilo que realmente sempre me fascinou nesta série foi a personagem da Cat Grant. No início não se dá muito pela personagem, pois parece que vai ser aquele cliché de patroa que é uma bitch para toda a gente, pois é a única maneira que a esfera masculina arranjou até agora para representar uma mulher forte e no poder. Mas abençoada seja esta personagem – e a actriz que a representa – porque ela, desde o início, que destrói todos estes preconceitos. Não querendo falar demais sobre o enredo, para mim, uma das melhores cenas irá ser sempre o discurso que ela fez em como era preferível designar-se esta heroína como supergirl e não superwoman. Foi simplesmente fantástico e um dos pontos auge desta série.

Don’t get me wrong when I say this, but there’s always been that group of shows that is just merely average, y’know. And I believe this show to be one of those cases. I’m not saying that this show is bad, I actually think it is quite interesting and I do recommend it, but it’s just that I’m always left with that feeling that I’m not seeing anything extraordinary. I actually think if this isn’t enough already. I mean, nowadays, how many superhero shows, mostly based on the DC and MARVEL comics, are out there? Netflix started by having basically two, now they have five shows. CW started with one, now they have around other five shows. I can’t help but feel that this is a bit too much, sometimes. But since this is the BIG genre nowadays, and for sure they’re making tons of moneys, otherwise they wouldn’t continue producing these shows, it’s clear it ain’t going nowhere anytime soon.

As I’ve mentioned before, this show is basically something that isn’t either too bad neither too great, being it in terms of characters, storylines, special effects, etc. I’m not sure if this is really me being critical or not, and in this case in a negative way, but hasn’t the nerdy, adorable, super reliable and next-door superhero, whose unfortunate story has lead him/her to be available on the first call to save everyone, been done already? Since the beginning that this show seems to be a feminine version of “The Flash”. I mean, it’s great that we have a show – without forgetting, obvious, the success that “Jessica Jones” is – finally and entirely focused on a female character, but I still believe it would have been even better if this was a unique character, and not just a simple female version of another (being in this case, a male one). A lit more of minority representation wouldn’t be a bad move on this show either. But what fascinated me more about this show, and basically what made me want to write this review, was one of its characters – Cat Grant. In the beginning you don’t really care about this character, because it seems she will just become one of the those female-boss stereotypes, in which she’s a total bitch to everyone in order to make people respect her, that male writers only seem to be capable of creating. But god bless this character – and the actress who plays her – because since the very beginning she has been calling everyone out on their shit, showing how wrong these prejudices are, and destroying every single of them at the same time. I don’t wanna give out too much but I’ll just say that, for me, one of the best scenes on this show was the speech that she did on how it was better to describe this superhero as supergirl and not superwoman. This speech was just bloody amazing and the highlight of this show.

“Shadowhunters” é uma série de fantasia norte-americana baseada em “The Mortal Instruments” de Cassandra Clare. Ela foi desenvolvida por Ed Decter e produzida pela Constantin Film. Esta série conta a história de Clary Fray que, no seu 18º aniversário, descobre que é uma shadowhunter – um humano com sangue de anjo que protege outros humanos de demónios. Durante esta mesma noite, a sua mãe é raptada por membros do “The Circle” – um grupo elitista do mundo das sombras -, pelo que Clary começa uma jornada para encontrar a sua mãe, com a ajuda do seu melhor amigo, Simon, e de outros três shadowhunters, Alec, Izzy e Jace. (x) A primeira temporada já foi totalmente transmitida nos Estados Unidos, e a segunda temporada irá começar no próximo ano.

Eu acredito que esta série tinha muito que penar e trabalhar para ter sucesso, especialmente tendo em conta as expectativas que se criaram à sua volta depois da adaptação para filme ter sido um desastre. Os primeiros episódios podem-nos ter deixado na dúvida em relação ao seu potencial e futuro, mas eu penso que desde então eles têm vindo a fazer um muito bom trabalho. Esta não é propriamente aquela típica série vencedora de dezenas de prémios – especialmente porque as categorias de fantasia e sobrenatural são super subestimadas; é mais aquela vossa série normal – girl/boy-next-door como se diz em inglês. Muito poucas pessoas conseguem atingir aquilo que a Shonda Rimes fez com How To Get Away with Murder, por exemplo, mas Shadowhunters também não é assim tão terrível como parece à primeira vista ou como algumas pessoa a pintaram. Eu sei que tenho de concordar com o facto de alguns actores precisarem de adicionar mais força e emoção às suas prestações, mas tem-se vindo a ver um incrível melhoramento desde o primeiro episódio. Com uma segunda temporada a ser produzida, há mais do que espaço para tratar de algumas pontas soltas, isto é, tempo para desenvolverem melhores prestações, não despedir alguém. E além do mais não há assim tantas séries que tenham primeiras temporadas absolutamente perfeitas. Porém, Shadowhunters tem mesmo a seu favor o facto de ser altamente agradável, o que eu penso ser um dos pilares das séries.

Sendo esta uma série sobrenatural e de fantasia, é mais do que óbivo que depende de efeitos especiais, que na realidade não são assim tão maus como as pessoas os têm vindo a descrever. Quer dizer, há séries que já andam por estes lados há anos – *coff* OUAT *coff* – e continuam a ter uma equipa de efeitos especiais muito má. Mas metendo este assunto de parte, eu tenho é de dar os parabéns a quem quer que esteja responsável pela banda sonora – algumas cenas, se não mesmo todas, foram imensamente reforçadas pelas músicas que tocavam no pano de fundo – e pelos efeitos de áudio desta série. Se quisermos ser mesmo muito picuinhas, estou certa que podemos encontrar qualquer coisa para reclamar mesmo nas séries mais prezadas de todos os tempos, mas para ser sincera, estes dois departamentos são cinco estrelas. Os seus efeitos de áudio são sem dúvida um dos melhores aspectos desta série.

O Matthew Daddario e a Emeraude Toubia tem algumas das melhores e mais fortes prestações nesta série. Mas para mim a maior surpresa foi o Harry Shum Jr., não porque tinha razões para duvidar das suas capacidades de actuação, mas porque nunca lhe foi dada uma oportunidade adequada enquanto ele estava no Glee – aquilo mais parecia que ele era um adereço. E o mesmo digo para o Dominic Sherwood, o Alberto Rosende e o David Castro. Ser um bom actor não implica apenas saber-se debitar uma quantidade enorme de linhas e fazê-lo parece uma qualquer conversa mundana normal. Isto também implica transmitir emoções e sentimentos através dos nossos olhos e expressões faciais. E é exactamente aqui que estes actores se têm estado a destacar nesta série.

Mas indo directamente para os aspectos que são realmente importantes acerca desta série… O seu elenco principal inclui não só um mas sim 4 actores POC e o seu elenco secundário inclui mais 5 actores POC. Dois dos seus principais actores pertencem à comunidade LGBTQ e, até ao momento, são o único casal canon na série. Isto pode não parecer muito – porque sejamos sinceros, o nosso mundo é muito mais diverso do que isto – mas este é na realidade um muito bom ponto de partida; estes detalhes são muito importantes. Apesar do que muita gente pode dizer para aí, há pessoas – especialmente os mais novos – que admiram personagens de séries e filmes, por isso é mais do que importantíssimo termos cuidado com o que lhes é apresentado. Estes detalhes na série só demonstram que todos nós importamos; demonstram que não importa qual é que é a nossa orientação sexual porque todos nós somos importantes; demonstram que não interessa de onde vimos, nós continuamos a ser importantes. Mas estes aspectos positivos não acabam aqui. Tantas mas tantas séries retratam uma quantidade gigantesca de relações tóxicas, nocivas e ilegais, o que faz com que seja impossível retirar daqui algum bom exemplo. Mas está série conseguiu de algum modo ser a excepção e estabelecer aqui um bom exemplo. E não falo aqui apenas de relações amorosas mas também de qualquer outro tipo de relação que vocês se possam lembrar. Finalmente temos irmãos que realmente se apoiam uns aos outros, raparigas que se respeitam e tratam bem umas às outras, adultos que resolvem os seus problemas e não agem como crianças mimadas – *coff* Grey’s Anatomy *coff*. Acreditem que eu poderia continuar aqui por várias horas a falar do quão espectactulares estas personagens são, mas vou deixar por terminados os meus comentários, por agora. No final, eu estou bastante feliz por ter começado a acompanhar esta série – agora é esperar que eles não estraguem o óptimo trabalho que começaram.

I believe that this show had a lot to live up to, considering all the expectations created around it after the film adaptation proved to be a complete flop. The first couple of episodes may have left us concerning about its potential and future, but I think they’ve been doing a pretty damn good job ever since. This isn’t your typical award-winning show – especially when fantasy and supernatural genres are always underestimated -; it’s more like your girl/boy-next-door kinda show. Not that many people can master or archieve what Shonda Rhimes did with How To Get Away with Murder, for example, but Shadowhunters isn’t that terrible as it may seem at first or as some people paint it. I have to agree that some of its actors need to add more strength and emotion to their acting, but there has been a considerable and clear improvement since the first episodes. With a second season on the making, I believe there’s still room to tie some loose ends, by which I mean developing a stronger acting power, not firing someone. And besides not that many shows have such strong first seasons. However, Shadowhunters does have in its favour the fact that it is really entertaining, which I think is one of the pillars of TV shows.

Being this a supernatural/fantasy TV show, it obviously relies on visual effects which aren’t that horrible as people describe them to be. I mean there are shows that have been around for quite some time – *cough* OUAT *cough* – and still have a pretty lousy visual effects team. This matter aside, I do have to congratulate whoever is in charge of the soundtrack – some scenes, if not all of them, have been immensely enhanced by the songs playing on the background – and the audio effects. If we wan to be too picky I’m sure we can find something to complain about even in the most highly praised show of all times, but to be honest these two departments are A+. Their audio effects are definitely one of their strongest best features.

Matthew Daddario and Emeraude Toubia have some of the best and strongest performances on this show. But for me the biggest surprise was Harry Shum Jr., not because I had reasons to doubt his acting skills, but because he was never given a proper chance at actually acting while he was on Glee – sometimes it actually felt like he was just a set prop. And the same goes for Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende and David Castro. Being a good actor doesn’t just mean that you can drop lines making it sound like a normal mundane conversation. It also means that you can convey emotion and feelings through your eyes and facial expressions. And this is exactly what I think these actors are bringing to this show.

But moving onto the definitely important features that this show is bringing to the table… Its main cast includes not only one but four POC and its recurring cast includes five more POC actors. Two of its main characters belong to the LGBTQ community and so far they’re the only canon couple on the show. It might not seem as much – because let’s be honest, the world is far more diverse than this – but this is a really good starting point; these details are really important. No matter what we can say about this subject, people – especially young people – do look up to characters they see on shows and films, so it bloody matters what’s shown to them. These kind of things show us that we all matter; it shows us that no matter what your sexual orientation is you’re important; it shows us that no matter where you come from you matter. But these positive features don’t end just here. Sooooo many shows portray such a big amount of poisonous, hurtful and illegal relationships, that’s difficult to actually take any kind of example from them. But this show somehow managed to set up a pretty damn good example for once. And I’m not only talking about romantic relationships but also about whatever other kind of relationships you guys can think of. For once we have siblings who truly support each other, girls who respect and treat each other well, adults actually solving their crap and not acting like spoiled children – *cough* Grey’s Anatomy *cough*. I could go on and on and on about how amazing these characters are, but I’ll rest my case for now. At the end I’m really happy I started watching this show – I just hope that they don’t mess up the good work they’ve started.

Eu já tinha falado desta série aqui no blog uma vez, mas falar dela mais uma vez também não faz mal a ninguém, não é? Esta série tem apenas duas temporadas – e daquelas mais ou menos pequeninas – mas desde os primeiros episódios que se tornou numa das minhas actuais séries favoritas. “How To Get Away with Murder” segue a vida pessoal e profissional de Annalise Keating, uma professora de Direito Penal da Middleton University, Pensilvânia, uma das mais prestigiadas escolas de direito dos Estados Unidos da América. Como advogada de defesa criminal, Annalise seleccionou um grupo dos seus melhores alunos para trabalharem na sua empresa. Eles são: Connor Walsh, Michaela Pratt, Asher Millstone, Laurel Castillo e Wes Gibbins. Na sua vida pessoal, Annalise vive com o seu marido, Sam Keating; mas tem também uma relação secreta com Nate Lahey, um detective. (x)

I’ve talked about this TV show here before but writing about it once more won’t hurt anyone, am I right? This TV show only has two seasons – those sort of tiny season y’know – but it has been one of my current favourite TV shows since its first episodes. “‘How to Get Away with Murder’ follows the personal and professional life of Annalise Keating, a criminal law professor at the fictional Middleton University in Philadelphia, one of the most prestigious law schools in America. A criminal defence lawyer, Annalise selects a group of her best students from her university class to work at her firm. They are Connor Walsh, Michaela Pratt, Asher Millstone, Laurel Castillo and Wes Gibbins. In her personal life, Annalise lives with her husband, Sam Keating; but she also has a secret relationship with Nate Lahey, a local Philadelphia detective.” (x)

Há vários aspectos que fazem desta uma das minhas séries favoritas, começando pelo facto de ter um enredo bastante apelativo. O facto de se basear muito em flashbacks poderia levar a uma confusão generalizada, mas este é sem dúvida um aspecto a seu favor. Para quem gosta dos géneros de crime e drama é imperativo ver esta série, se ainda não o fizeram. Por mais que os episódios passem e passem, eu nunca perdi interesse no enredo porque há sempre um novo detalhe que nos é dado em todos os episódios. Eu sinto que perdi um bocado da excitação inicial na segunda parte da segunda temporada, mas a verdade é que os últimos 15 minutos de cada episódio são sempre de deixar qualquer um com a cabeça às voltas e de queixo caído. Depois a série tem um conjunto de personagens fascinantes. Não é que estas personagens sejam algo de outro mundo, ou extravagante; elas são fascinantes porque são reais. Estas são personagens com qualidades e defeitos, com bons e maus dias, com boas e más atitudes, que fazem boas e más escolhas. E há diversidade AMEM!!! Podia ser melhor, é verdade, mas é um começo. O que me leva a acrescentar que esta série também tem um elenco fantástico. Para mim, a Viola Davis é a alma desta série – a sua prestação é completamente brilhante -, mas o que não retira de todo o mérito ao resto do elenco que, para já, tem-se mostrado excelente para esta série. Agora só me resta esperar mais meio ano pela próxima temporada – pausa pequena não é?

There are several aspects that make this one of my favourite TV shows, starting by the fact that its plot is absolutely appealing. The fact that it is highly based on flashbacks could turn it into a generalised mess, but this is without a doubt one of its best features. For those of you who like the genres of crime and drama, there’s no way you can miss the chance of seeing this show, if you haven’t done so. No matter how many episodes I had seen, I never lost interest in the plot because there was always something new happening, there was always an extra detail being shown to us in each episode. I think that I lost a bit of excitement after the mid-season break, but the truth it that the last 15 minutes of every single episode are capable of leaving your world upside down and blowing your mind like there was not tomorrow. Then we have a fantastic set of fascinating characters. Not that these characters are somewhat out of this world, or extravagant for that matter; they’re fascinating because they’re real. These are characters with qualities and flaws, with good and bad days, with good and bad attitudes, with good and bad judgment calls. And there diversity AMEN!!! It could be better, that’s true, but it’s a start. Moreover, this show also has a fantastic cast. For me Viola Davis is the heart and soul of this show – her performances are just brilliant – but in no way this takes merit out of the rest of the cast which, so far, has shown to be perfect for this show. And all that’s left to be done is wait another half a year for the next season – small break isn’t it?

Random | TV Shows to Watch

De momento acompanho cerca de umas vinte séries, e tenho outra tantas que gostaria de ver. Porque não dá para ver dezenas e dezenas de séries todos os anos, há sempre umas quantas que ficam de parte para se verem mais tarde. E quando o tempo não o permite, estas séries vão acumulando até se criarem longas listas, que cada vez parecem ter menos fim com a quantidade de séries novas que estreiam todos os anos.

Agora que penso nisso, o número vinte parece ser super excessivo. Mas realmente se eu pensar bem sobre isto até que não é nada de extraordinário. As séries que eu vejo não são todas transmitidas durante a mesma altura do ano e depois temos as nossas tão adoradas pausas. Algumas das séries que vejo têm apenas episódios de vinte minutos pelo que quase não roubam tempo nenhum do nosso dia. E até mesmo as séries com episódios de quarenta minutos são óptimas opções para vermos num momento de pausa ao almoço, lanche ou jantar. Bem na realidade se organizarmos bem os nossos dias, vinte séries até que nem é um número assim tão excessivo como parece à primeira vista.

Esta lista não podia ser mais variada. Algumas destas séries já têm uns aninhos e até mesmo algumas décadas, enquanto que outras começaram a ser apenas transmitidas recentemente. E há até mesmo algumas séries que ainda estão para estrear este ano e em 2016. Há também séries nesta lista que já acabaram, enquanto que outras já ultrapassaram uma dezena de temporadas.  E estou certa que também me estou a esquecer de algumas séries. Mas passando à lista de séries que gostaria de ver…

Sem exageros, esta é sem dúvida uma das melhores séries que eu já vi na minha vida. E não me arrependo nada de a ter começado a ver em Setembro do ano passado. Honestamente, esta série é absolutamente FANTÁSTICA e BRILHANTE! Desde a selecção dos actores, passando pelo enredo e argumento, até à escolha da banda sonora, tudo nesta série é mesmo PERFEITO! Eu sempre fui fã do trabalho da Shonda Rhimes (também produtora das séries “Scandal” e “Grey’s Anatomy”), mas este é talvez o seu melhor trabalho até à data. E este post não podia ser uma melhor descrição desta série.

Without any kind of exaggerations, this is without a doubt one of the best tv shows I’ve ever watched in my entire life. And I do not regret at all having started watching it last September. Honestly, this tv show is absolutely FANTASTIC and BRILLIANT! From the casting of its actors, passing by its plot and screenplay, to the choice of its soundtrack, everything in this tv show is simply PERFECT! I’ve always been a fan of Shonda Rhimes’ work (she is also the producer of “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy”), but this is probably her best work to date. And this post couldn’t offer a better description of this tv show.

A show that you wish more people were watching… Marvel’s Agent Carter

Eu penso que esta série não é assim tão desconhecida – pelo menos não nos EUA – mas tendo em conta que apenas começou a ser transmitida há duas semanas, eu penso que ela se enquadra na perfeição nesta categoria. E além do mais, esta é uma série fantástica, por isso aconselho-vos mesmo a vê-la. Eu não quero entrar numa batalha pelos sexos aqui, mas a verdade é que é óptimo, para varia, ver uma série focada numa personagem feminina. E a Peggy é sem dúvida uma das minhas personagens femininas favoritas do Universo Cinematográfico da Marvel.

Esta série conta a história de Peggy Carter que, em 1946, deverá equilibrar a rotina do seu trabalho administrativo para a Strategic Scientific Reserve (S.S.R), enquanto secretamente ajuda Howard Stark, que se encontra incriminado por fornecer armas mortais a licitantes. Carter é assistida pelo mordomo de Stark, Edwin Jarvis, para encontrar os responsáveis e desfazer-se das armas.

I think this show isn’t that unknown – well at least not in the USA – but since it just started airing a couple of weeks ago, I thought it would fit perfectly in this category. And besides, it is such an amazing show, so you guys should really be watching it. I’m not trying to get into a social justice battle here, but it’s nice to see a show focused on a female character for a change. And Peggy is definitely one of my favourite female characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This show tells the story of Peggy Carter, who, in 1946, must balance the routine office work she does for the Strategic Scientific Reserve (S.S.R) while secretly assisting Howard Stark, who finds himself framed for supplying deadly weapons to the top bidder. Carter is assisted by Stark’s butler, Edwin Jarvis, to find those responsible and dispose of the weapons.

A show that should have never been canceled… FlashForward

“After the entire world’s population blacks out for approximately 2 minutes and 17 seconds, which in effect causes the entire world to see a glimpse of life 6 months into the future, an elite FBI task force is formed to investigate who/what caused the global blackout, whether the events foreseen were simply flashes or true events of what’s to come, and whether or not it could possibly happen again…”

“FlashForward” aired on ABC between September 24, 2009 and May 27, 2010, and was cancelled after just one season. This show is based on the novel “FlashForward” written by Robert J. Sawyer. “FlashForward” stars Joseph Fiennes (as FBI Special Agent Mark Benford), John Cho (as FBI Special Agent Demetri Fordis Noh), Jack Davenport (as Dr. Lloyd Simcoe), Zachary Knighton (as Dr. Bryce Varley), Peyton List (as Nicole Kirby), Dominic Monaghan (as Dr. Simon Campos), Brían F. O’Byrne (as Aaron Stark), Courtney B. Vance (as FBI Assistant Director Stanford Wedeck), Sony Walger (as Dr. Olivia Benford), Christine Woods (as FBI Special Agent Janis Hawk), Ryan Wynott (as Dylan Simcoe), Lennon Wynn (as Charlie Benford), among others.

I’m pretty sure that there’s plenty of shows that I could name right now. Television networks unfortunately only look at the ratings and not at the quality of the shows. But sometimes this is not even the case. However, this makes no sense in the particular case of this show. Not only did “FlashForward” actually had a good number of U.S. viewers, the show also received really good reviews. This is one of those cases that I don’t understand how a TV network decided to cancel a show. And this is not the only thing that bugs me. The fact that the show ended in a huge cliffhanger really annoys me. I know that the last episode was filmed before any cancellation announcement was made, but they could have had the decency of producing another episode just so the show could end properly.

Long May She Reign

Even without the usual title, this post will have the same purpose as those where I give you guys some film suggestions. The truth is, I normally use this rubric to also talk about some of my favourite TV series, even thought I’ve been doing it very rarely. I haven’t done one of these posts in ages, but this time I’ll be also publishing another besides this one soon. Apart from films, I’m also absolutely addicted to TV series (or TV shows; I actually prefer the first term), especially those related to historical periods – the so-called “period dramas”. In this context, I’ve watched “The Tudors” and “The White Queen“. I intent to watch “The Borgias” but I’ve yet to do it.

“Set in 1557 France, the highly fictionalised series follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, at French court while she awaits her marriage to the future Francis II of France, whom she has been engaged to since they were six. At court, Mary has to contend with the changing politics and power plays, as well as her burgeoning feelings for Francis and the romantic attentions from Francis’ bastard half-brother, Bash. Francis’ mother, Catherine de’ Medici, is secretly trying to prevent the marriage following Nostradamus’s confidential prediction that the marriage will lead to Francis’ death. The series also follows the affairs of Mary’s Scottish handmaidens Kenna, Aylee, Lola and Greer, who are searching for husbands of their own at court.”

Even thought part of its plot is based on actual historical facts, the truth is that the other half was made up by the creators. For an instance, Sebastian never existed and some other characters that appear we’re invented too. Since this is not supposed to be absolutely faithful to the actual true events, I don’t think this is a bad thing. Actually, it adds a certain uncertainty to the series, which is always hard to have on these because they’re based on events that have already occurred, and there’s no escape possible from that.

Reign stars Adelaide Kane (as Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots), Toby Regbo (as King Francis II of France), Torrance Coombs (as Sebastian, “Bash“), Megan Follows (as Catherine de’ Medici), Alan van Sprang (as King Henry II of France), Rossif Sutherland (as Nostradamus), Jenessa Grant (as Aylee), Celina Sinden (as Greer), Caitlin Stasey (as Kenna), Anna Popplewell (as Lola), Anna Walton (as Diane de Poitiers), Katie Boland (as Clarissa), among others.

I don’t know if I’m watching too many TV series but I don’t think I’ve ever been this emotionally invested in one before. From the very first seconds, as you get more and more attached to the main characters, they will rip your heart out of your chest, squeeze it for such a long time that it will seem like an eternity and then aaa into a million little pieces. Don’t get me wrong. This is not a bad thing. On the contrary, this is absolutely a really good sign since it demonstrates that the actors are conveying perfectly their characters emotions and transmitting them to us. As with good books, I love when a TV series makes us feel as if we are part of it, as if we are in the middle of the action feeling every bit of pain and happiness as the characters do. This is not an easy thing to accomplish, so I must give them credit for it, not only to the producers but especially to the amazing cast they’ve selected. Apart from the costumes, which are always so beautiful in these type of TV series, Reign has a very good soundtrack: one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I believe I don’t have much to criticise, except for the fact that maybe they reached the climax too fast. I wish the end of the first half had gone a little bit slower, digging more into some characters’ emotions and actions but I guess it wouldn’t have made sense for the time period in which the plot is set. We have to admit that at that time, History wasn’t being made at a slow pace.

This TV series premiered in the United States of America on the 17th of October. Today (27th February) premieres the second half of the first season. The CW renewed the series for a second season. Until this moment, there’s no date for a premiere on Portugal.
