“After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.” (x)

So far this film has a score of 60% (based on 105 reviews) on the rottentomatoes website, which presents the following comment: “‘The Light Between Oceans‘ presents a well-acted and handsomely mounted adaptation of its bestselling source material, but ultimately tugs on the heartstrings too often to be effective”. Some critics mention that Cianfrance has stretch too much the line of melancholy present on his filmes, as he hits its breaking point with “The Lights Between Oceans” – it goes straight from melancholy to melodrama. In spite of Fassbender and Vikander’s good performances, this film’s plot is still too artificial to go unnoticed (Tasha Robinson, The Verge; Jon Frosch, The Hollywood Reporter). However, other critics believe that Cianfrance actually did a great job with this film, definitely also thanks to the performances of his main actors, as in he did manage to explore the darkest and recondite features of romantic relationships (Owen Gleiberman, Variety; David Ehrlich, Indie Wire).
