Até ao momento, este filme tem uma classificação de 18% (com base em 82 críticas) no website rottentomatoes, o qual apresenta o seguinte comentário: “Com efeitos especiais pouco impressionantes e um enredo que aparenta reunir bocados de outros filmes distópicos de ficção científica para jovens adultos, ‘The 5th Wave‘ acaba por ficar aquém das suas expectativas”. Eddie Cockrell da revista Variety referiu que este é um filme pós-apocalíptico decente, com alguma originalidade, mas com o qual, os fãs do livro, podem ficar desapontados. Contudo, Brian Pruitt da revista USA Today considera que este é um bom filme, onde Chloë Grace Moretz e Nick Robinson têm duas boas prestações.

So far this film has a score of 18% (based on 82 critics) on the rotten tomatoes website, which presents the following comment: “With unimpressive effects and plot points seemingly pieced together from previous dystopian YA sci-fi films, ‘The 5th Wave’ ends up feeling like more of a limp, derivative wriggle”. Eddie Cockrell from Variety claimed that this is a somewhat decent post-apocalyptic film, with a spin of originality, but that perhaps may disappoint fans of the book. Nevertheless, Brian Pruitt from USA Today considers that this is a good motion picture and praised Chloë Grace Moretz e Nick Robinson perfomances.
