Pete Hammond (Deadline) escreve que uma das chaves do sucesso deste filme recai no facto de se ter aqui personagens únicas, com as quais nos podemos facilmente identificar. Por outro lado, parece ser unânime a boa prestação de Eva Green neste filme.

Most critics really seem to believe that this novel was a match made in heaven for Tim Burton’s genius as a director. Pete Hammond (Deadline) writes that one of the keys to the success of this film relies on the fact that we’re in the presence of unique characters, with whom we can easily identify with. However, it seems that this film extends itself for too long, ending by loosing control on itself, especially toward the end (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian; Nicholas Rees, Vulture). On another note, it seems unanimous to praise Eva Green for her performance in this film.
