When tragedy strikes close to home, 16-year-old Jacob ‘Jake’ Portman is forced to travel to an island in Wales filled with mystery in order to discover the truth of what really happened. Jake’s ordinary life takes an extraordinary turn as the childhood fairytales he heard from his grandfather start to become more plausible.

So far this film has a score of 63% (based on 139 reviews) on the rottentomatoes website, which presents the following comment: “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children‘ proves a suitable match for Tim Burton’s distinctive style, even if it’s on stronger footing as a visual experience than a narrative one”. Most critics really seem to believe that this novel was a match made in heaven for Tim Burton’s genius as a director. Pete Hammond (Deadline) writes that one of the keys to the success of this film relies on the fact that we’re in the presence of unique characters, with whom we can easily identify with. However, it seems that this film extends itself for too long, ending by loosing control on itself, especially toward the end (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian; Nicholas Rees, Vulture). On another note, it seems unanimous to praise Eva Green for her performance in this film.
