“Há três irmãs: Sachi Kouda, de 29 anos, Yoshino Kouda, de 22 anos, e Chika Kouda, de 19 anos. Elas vivem na sua casa em Kamakura. A sua casa foi deixada pela sua avó. Um dia, elas recebem a notícia de que o seu pai morreu. Quando as irmãs eram mais novas, os seus pais divorciaram-se e o seu pai deixou-as. Elas não veêm o seu pai há 15 anos. Ao ouvirem a notícia da morte do seu pai, as irmãs assistem ao funeral do seu pai. No funeral, elas conhecem a sua meia-irmão, Suzu Asano. Ela tem 14 anos e não tem ninguém para cuidar dela. Este filme é baseado na manga, “Umimachi Diary”, de Akimi Yoshida, cuja adaptação para o grande ecrã foi escrita por Hirokazu Koreeda.

“There are three sisters: 29-year-old Sachi Kouda, 22-year-old Yoshino Kouda and 19-year-old Chika Kouda. They live at a house in Kamakura. Their house was left by their grandmother. One day, they receive news of their father’s death. When the sisters were young, their parents divorced and their father left them. They haven’t seen their father in 15 years. Upon hearing the news on their father’s death, the sisters attend their father’s funeral. At the funeral, they meet their half-sister Suzu Asano. Este filme tem vindo a receber críticas muito positivas. Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) escreve que este filme é “soberbamente não forçado e despretensioso”, e que ele fornece à sua audiência notas de optimismo. Este crítica também diz que “ver este filme é uma estimulação de vitaminas para a alma”. Alguns críticos também prezam a capacidade do realizador de contar uma história familiar sem criar demasiado drama não necessário, mas conseguindo ao mesmo tempo criar uma bela peça de arte (Tim Robey, The Telegraph, e Maggie Lee, Variety).
