Até ao momento, este filme conta com uma classificação de 72% (com base em 167 críticas) no website rottentomatoes, o qual apresenta o seguinte comentário: “‘The BFG‘ minimiza os elementos mais obscuros da versão clássica de Roald Dahl em favor de uma aventura familiar visualmente deslumbrante e boa índole”. Este filme tem recebido uma larga quantidade de boas críticas. Stephanie Zacharek (Time) e Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) escrevem que este é um dos melhores trabalhos de fantasia de Steven Spielberg, não só graças ao seu enorme talento como realizador, mas também ao talento de um dos seus actores principais, Mark Rylance. Stephanie refere que, embora este enredo se tenha desviado daquilo que é a história original (por curiosidade, até com a autorização do próprio autor), ele consegue manter impropriedade lunática e algo maliciosa do seu autor original. É de destacar ainda o trabalho de Melissa Mathison com o argumento deste filme, ao tornar a relação de Sophie e do BFG mais profunda (Peter Debruge, Variety). Contudo, alguns críticos, como A.A. Dowd (AV Club), consideram que este filme não é adequado para o grande ecrã, sobretudo devido à sua estreita narrativa.

This film has received a large quantity of good reviews. Stephanie Zacharek (Time) and Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) write that this is one of the best fantasy-genre projects from Steven Spielberg, not only thanks to his talents as a director, but also due to Mark Rylance’s talent. Stephanie also mentions that, even though this plot has distanced itself from its original story (which was authorised by its original author), it manages to maintain its original author’s whimsical and waggishness impropriety. Melissa Mathison’s contribute to this film’s screenplay is also to be highlighted, especially because she managed to deepen Sophie and her BFG’s relationship (Peter Debruge, Variety). However, some critics, such as A.A. Down (AV Club), consider that this film isn’t that suitable for the big screen, mostly due to its thin narrative.
